Hands-on Activity in Grade 9

Hands-on Activity during a Magnificent  Biology Session with Grade 9 Learners...

Karyotype is a picture of chromosomes which are arranged in decreasing order of size, according to the shape, position of the centromere, distribution of the color bands.

To understand this, nothing will be better than performing karyotyping in the classroom.
My Grade 9 learners enjoyed their Biology lesson by having this hands-on activity, make their own karyotypes, identify the gender and the number of chromosomes in their karyotypes and specify if there is abnormality or not...

At the end of the session, they felt like Biology is a very interesting subject. They felt as if they were dealing with chromosomes which are very hard to imagine... This is real involvement... I am sure they will never forget this lesson. Based on my experience, I always recommend teachers to engage learners in hands-on activities and they will find the difference, since learners will remember what they have had within their hands, what they have done themselves what they have thought about.

I like the idea of hands-on activities in biology, even with little materials a teacher can make the explanation very interesting and engage a big number of them, they'll never forgot this lesson this is true. I remember when I was a student every lesson that the teacher included materials and staff in, Good job!

  2. So interesting! I loved the idea of hands-on activity. such activities will become embedded in students' minds and will never be forgotten, and that is the main aim; to focus on the the concept itself and not the facts only. So as teachers, we must increase such activities within our sessions to benefit the whole levels of the educators.
